The year 2011 is declared as International Year of Forests by United Nations. The total amount of forests is decreasing day by day throughout the world at an alarming rate. To make conscious the people of the world about the importance of forest reservation this year is declared as International Year of Forest.
Forests consist of 31% of the total land area on earth. This forestland is the living place of almost 300 millions of people and 80% of the total biodiversity. Saving forests is compulsory for the sustainable development of the world. According to IMF, 1.6 billion of people depend on forests for their livelihood. If forests detoriorate, the biodiversity will be lost and without biodiversity humans existence also be endangered. So, the forests of the earth must be saved at any cost.
As mentioned by FAO (Food and Agricultural Organization) of United Nations there is a deforestation occurring as a rate of 130 thousands Kilometers per year allover the world which is near to the total area of Bangladesh. According to the calculation of world bank, the green house effect is increased 20% more severe for deforestation. besides, deforestation is one of the prime reason for desertification.
At this condition the year 2011 is declared as International Year of Forests by the secretariat of United Nations and everyone is requested to take necessary steps for successful celebration of this event. The year of Forests will be arranged by three phases: national, regional and international. Several countries of the world are already taken initiatives to organize the events of the year of forests.
About the logo: The theme for the logo that designed for the year of forests is "Forest for People" celebrating the central role of people in the sustainable management. The elements in the design depict some of the multiple values of forests and the need for a perspective: forests provide shelter to people and habitat to biodiversity; are a source of food, medicine and clean water; and play a vital role in maintaining a stable global climate and environment. All of these elements taken together reinforce the message that forests are vital to the survival and well being of people everywhere, all 7 billion of us.
